No Toilet, No Marriage

NPR's Goats and Soda blog reports on Toilet: A Love Story, a new film in India featuring the serious social justice issue of access to sanitation. 450 million Indians still relieve themselves out in the open. This can be a health and safety issue for women, who often are forced to rise before dawn or wait until after dark to defecate. But it's also having an impact on their marriage.

This isn't just a made-up story for the movies. In a case of life imitating art, a week after the film released, Indian courts granted a divorce to a young woman on the grounds that her husband hadn't installed a toilet in their home, causing her much agony during their two-year marriage.
