Mercy Corps defines food security as a state when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Food security means more than simple food distribution. It means making sure that people have the ability to grow their own food, and the income to buy it in the future. While extremely important, providing hunger relief through emergency food supplies is not a long-term solution; instead, food security means access to food will be sustainable.
