Student Partnerships Worldwide (SPW)

SPW is an international development charity that recruits and trains young adults (aged 18-28) as volunteer Peer Educators, to lead programmes that address urgent health and environmental issues. SPW reaches 400,000 young people a year at a very low cost per individual. They offer programs ranging from 5-11 months in duration with program fees of about 7,000 USD depending on length.

SPW works in sub-Saharan Africa in Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Zambia and South Asia in India and Nepal.


Volunteer in Africa

Volunteer in Africa offers volunteer opportunities in Ghana through a range of programs from health care to conservation. Program lengths go from 1-12 weeks with no specialized experience required except for the health care programs. Volunteer in Africa has also compiled a listing of volunteer information for Africa which is available on their website. Costs range from 750 - 4,000 USD.

Volunteer in Africa works exclusively in Ghana, West Africa.


VolunteerAfrica

Volunteer Africa works in Tanzania and offers programs ranging from 4-11 weeks. Volunteer Africa combines many years of experience with 21st century technology to offer programs in community development and more. Costs range from around 2,000 - 3,500 USD.

Volunteer Africa works exclusively in Tanzania.


Cross-Cultural Solutions

Cross-Cultural Solutions offers the opportunity to work side-by-side with local people and experience another culture like never before. With program lengths of 1-12 weeks starting year round, the New York Times considers it "something akin to a mini-stint with the Peace Corps." No experience is necessary to join and program fees range from 1,500 - 5,206 USD.

Cross-Cultural Solutions works in 12 countries throughout Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.


WorldTeach

WorldTeach, founded at Harvard in 1986, offers applicants the opportunity to experience another country as an insider through being a volunteer teacher. WorldTeach offers programs in either a 2-month summer program or year-long format. For the year-long program a Bachelor of Arts degree is required and the summer programs are available to current students. Costs range from 1,500-5,900 USD.

World Teach operates in 16 countries throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe (Poland).


Developing World Connections (DWC)

Take a Volunteer-Vacation with DWC. DWC offers short-term volunteer opportunities mainly in the field of rural development. Most programs include the exciting option of a third week as a cultural tour to give participants the opportunity to visit the attractions of the region and boost cultural understanding. Program fees are around 1,700 USD (including hotel stay) plus extra for the optional third week cultural tour.

DWC works in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Guatemala.


Global Citizens Network

Global Citizens Network sends teams of short-term volunteers to rural communities in other cultures where participants immerse themselves in the daily life of the community. Each volunteer team is partnered with a local grassroots organization active in meeting local needs. Start dates are throughout most of the year and the programs are offered throughout the world. Program costs range from 750 - 2,000 USD.

Global Citizens Networks works in Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, Mexico Tanzania, Thailand, Kenya, and Nepal as well as the states of Arizona, Kentucky and Washington in the United States.


Volunteer with Globe Aware

Globe Aware is a non-profit organization offering volunteer vacations with the emphasis on having fun and helping people. Their programs are often compared to a "mini-Peace Corps." Globe Aware offers one week programs with a cost of 1,000 - 1,400 USD depending on the program.

Globe Aware currently offers Volunteer Vacations in Peru, Costa Rica, Thailand, Cuba, Nepal, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Brazil.


The International DRH Movement

Working in coordination with the Humana people to people organization, The DRH Movement trains motivated people from around the world to work as Development Instructors (international volunteers) in several countries. The Development Instructor Program is an opportunity to be an active force in creating peace and development. The DRH movement is based in Norway and offers six months of training, six months in the field and then two months evaluation and information work. Costs vary on the location and airfare is split 50/50 by the participant and Humana people to people. Click on the intro tab for helpful information.

The International DRH Movement works in Angola, Botswana, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe in Africa and offers training and volunteering in Brazil and the Caribbean.


Cosmic Volunteers

Cosmic Volunteers offers volunteer programs with the purpose of contributing to the world in a meaningful way. Programs are offered in a wide array of disciplines from healthcare to conservation work. Experience is only required for medical programs. Cosmic Volunteers works in 10 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.


Global Exchange

Global Exchange provides individuals the opportunity to understand issues beyond what is communicated by the mass media and gain a new vantage point from which to view and affect US foreign policy. Global Exchange does this through Reality Tours with a different regional focus for each fascinating country. Trips range from 850 to 3,000 USD and last from 7 to 15 days. Global Exchange is dedicated to international human rights, and promotes political, environmental and social justice. Partial scholarships are available.

Global Exchange offers Reality Tours in over 30 countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.


The Peace Boat Global Peace Voyage

Originally founded to foster understanding and communication in light of Japan's military action in WWII, the Peace Boat now offers a number of programs designed to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for the environment. Global trips last around three months and visit between 15 and 20 countries. This is a great opportunity to promote peaceful international relations. Each year Japan selects delegations from different countries to share in this life-changing journey. Click on the Get Involved tab (upper right) to learn more.

Each Peace Boat voyage visits between 15 and 20 countries.


Global VolunteerNetwork (GVN)

GVN is a New Zealand-based company that aims to support the work of local community organizations in developing countries. GVN was launched after its founder returned from a volunteering stint and was amazed at the excessive costs of international volunteer programs. GVN does not generally require previous experience and has programs throughout the world with a wide range of time lengths.

GVN is an expanding organization and currently has programs in 21 countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania (New Zealand).
